Lost In Translation
Lost in Translation is a 14-image black-and-white photographic series that explores the idea that genuine human connection can transcend language. Created while studying abroad in Italy, the series documents the relationship between two individuals who met by chance despite speaking different native languages. As their relationship grew, so did their willingness to learn one another's language, revealing that communication extends far beyond words.
Challenge
Capture a visual story through photography that communicates emotion, vulnerability, and human connection without relying on dialogue or written narrative.
Can you utilize your subject and composition to portray a narrative that can be understood without explanation.
Solution
Presented entirely in black and white, the series emphasizes expression, body language, and atmosphere to create a cinematic narrative that celebrates love's ability to transcend language and cultural differences. By stripping away the distraction of color, the imagery draws attention to subtle gestures, quiet moments, and shared emotion, revealing that the strongest forms of communication are often the ones left unspoken.
Process
The series documents the relationship between two individuals who met while living in Italy and gradually learned one another's language. While select compositions were thoughtfully directed to strengthen the visual narrative, the emotions, expressions, and interactions remain entirely authentic. Rather than performing for the camera, the subjects simply existed within one another's company, allowing each photograph to capture genuine moments of affection, trust, and quiet intimacy.
