Modular Typography
An exploration of typography through the creation of custom modular letterforms. Working within the constraint of five assigned words, each word was developed as a distinct typeface using a consistent modular system. The challenge centered on balancing experimentation with legibility while ensuring each typeface maintained its own visual identity.
Design five custom modular typefaces from a predetermined list of words, with each typeface expressing a unique visual personality while functioning within a cohesive 18" × 24" poster composition.
Challenge
Solution
The completed poster showcases how modular design principles can produce expressive, highly individualized typefaces while maintaining harmony within a single composition. The project demonstrates an understanding of typographic systems, visual hierarchy, and experimental letterform design.

Process
Each word was developed using its own modular system, allowing individual letterforms to communicate distinct characteristics through repetition, geometry, and structure. Careful attention was given to hierarchy, spacing, and composition, ensuring the five type systems could coexist within a unified visual layout.
The process included much exploration of shape and understanding what forms were modular and which were not, in order to design 5 unique systems.
